Recent proliferation of non-linear loads such as adjustable-speed motor drives, power supplies and inverters have raised serious concerns on the quality and reliability of electrical distribution networks. These loads draw excessive harmonic currents which interact with a wide range of power system components, causing significant deterioration in the power quality. Although traditional passive filtering has been commonly used to mitigate these problems, recent advances in power electronic converters have sparked the interest in active power filter (APF) approach. This book describes the design, analysis and implementation of a hybrid APF connected to a photovoltaic system. The integration improves the harmonic filtering performance of a basic shunt APF while simultaneously supplying power from the photovoltaic array to the load. The compensation current reference for the APF is derived from the extension instantaneous reactive-power theorem. It simplifies the current reference estimation, leading to a more efficient implementation using digital signal processor.

The switching of APF is carried out by hysteresis band current controller. In order to validate the system performance, two reference current generation techniques have been used (pq theory and SRF theory). The results achieved from SRF theory were satisfied and more accurate as compared to pq theory. The proposed controller mitigates the harmonics and satisfies the international harmonic standard set in IEEE-519.

These requirements involve precise and continuous reactive power control with fast response time and avoidance of harmonic line current generation. Solid state Var compensators using forced commutated converters have been developed and are being used for this purpose. Active power filtering (APF) can provide VAr compensation by injecting equal but opposite distortion at selected points in a network. The objective of this project is to design an Active Power Filter (APF) using Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) to achieve reactive power compensation. It is achieved by forcing the inverter line current to follow a reactive sinusoidal reference at a constant switching frequency. The current reference generator has been designed for both lagging and leading reactive power conditions. The reactive power requirements of a bridge rectifier connected load are estimated using the above current reference generator. Using this, an APF is designed to compensate the reactive power requirements of the above load.

Simulation and experimental investigations is presented for evaluating the performance of different control algorithms of SHAPF. In the experimental prototype the control circuit is developed using ARM Cortex-M4 STM32F407VGT6 microcontroller. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm and also validate the simulation results.
